AT BROOME.
A correspondent writes:--An unusually brilliant function took place at Broome, when, on board the s.s. Paroo, Mr. M. Rubin, the well-known pearl buyer, tendered his friends a dinner, prior to his departure for London, accompanied by his wife and their two sons. Mr. Roche, the chief steward, had received carte blanche, and was able to gratify the numerous guests willi a menu which would have done credit to a first-class hotel, whilst a most pleasant surprise consisted of dainty and beautiful flowers, fresh and fragrant, which had been carried from Fremantle in hermetically sealed cases. After full justice had been done to the viands and choice wines provided, Mr. M. S. Warton, R.M.. proposed the health of the host and hostess. He eulogised Mr. Rubin for his energetic efforts to better the condition of the pearling industry, and for his plucky investments in the staple gems of Broome. The residents were all pleased to have been afforded the opportunity of meeting Mrs. Rubin, and trusted that that lady would again accompany her husband to Broome. Mr. Rubin suitably replied, and in response to calls Mr. A. Davis also addressed the company. Many other toasts followed, and a most enjoyable couple of hours were spent in the gaily decorated saloon. The company afterwards assembled on the promenade deck, where a flashlight photograph of the group was taken bv Nishioka, a local Japanese artist. Among the guests were Mr. M. S. Warton, R.M., Dr. and Mrs. Blick, Mr. W. Clarke-Hall (Mayor of Broome), Mr. A. Davis. Cr. and Mrs. H. T. Bourne, Captain Mills, Captain Biddles, Mr. Archibald Male, Mrs. Arthur Male, Mr Thos. Smythe (manager Union Bank), Messrs. H. D. Norman. A. B. C. Doyle, Archer, and Blackman.
