GOVERNMENT FISH SUPPLIES.

EXTENSION TO THE GOLDFIELDS.

Kalgoorlie, Feb. 7.

A step towards the establishment of a promised fresh fish supply for the goldfields was made on Saturday, when the Colonial Secretary (Mr. Drew), accompanied by Messrs. Millington, Cornell, Green, and Munsie, arrived in Kalgoorlie. This afternoon the Colonial Secretary explained that

the objects of the visit was to investigate the conditions, aud ascertain whether it was possible to establish branches of the State Fish Supply Department at Kalgoorlie and Boulder. He had been in consultation with the Mayors of Kalgoorlie and Boulder, and had found that both gentlemen were anxious to assist the project in any way possible. After carrying out an inspection he had decided to launch the scheme by forwarding on Thursday week next 5cwt. of fish to Kalgoorlie, and a similar amount to Boulder. The fish would be provided to the public at prices fixed by himself, and practically Perth prices would rule, with freight and other incidental expenses added. The arrangements would be left to the discretion of Kalgoorlie and Boulder councils, both of which bodies had promised to supervise the sale in their respective towns. The Minister added that this would only be a temporary arrangement, and increased supplies wouid be forwarded as quickly as possible. Mr. Drew explained that the Government intended to chartor the Una, now engaged in running the mail service on the south-east coast, and to utilise both her and the Fynd to multiply the supplies. The Government had the assistance of unemployed pearlers in netting fish, and with the advent of a stores ship the only duty of the steamers would be to call at the bay, load from the supply on the stationary vessel, and return. Mr. Drew said increased supplies should be available in two months' time.
