STATE STEAMSHIP SERVICE.
Owing, it is understood, to ill-health, resulting from the strain of controlling the enterprise, Mr. W. E. Sudholz has tendered his resignation as manager of the State Steamship Service in order to accept a less responsible post in the service. His resignation was accepted at the last meeting of the Executive Council. Questioned on the subject on Saturday, the Colonial Secretary stated that the responsibilities, attendant on the initiation of the steamship service, had affected Mr. Sudholz's health, as was shown by his breakdown during a sitting of the recent Royal Commission. He was given three weeks' leave of absence, but he subsequently approached him (the Colonial Secretary) and asked to be relieved of the worries of management for his health's sake. He said he would be quite prepared to accept the position of sub-manager and chief accountant at a less salary. Cabinet, after a good deal of consideration, decided to accede to the request. Mr. Sudholz carried out his duties very conscientiously during a very strenuous twelve months. Captain Winzar, Harbour-master at Albany, will act as manager pending the appointment of a permanent manager. Applications are to be invited for the position in the usual way.
