NORTH-WEST MAIL CONTRACT.
THE GOVERNMENT SUCCESSFUL.
Melbourne, Oct. 20.
The Postmaster-General (Mr. Frazer) announced yesterday that he had let a three years' contract for the carriage of mails to tbe North-West coast to the Western Australian Government. The new service will commence on March 1 next. It will be substantially a continuance of the present mail service between Derby and Wyndham, but the vessel will go to Port Darwin, in the Northern Territory. It will run from Derby to Port Darwin and back, via Wyndham, once every 60 days, and will remain 24 hours at Port Darwin and on the return journey 24 hours at Wyndham. The subsidy to be paid to the Western Australian Government by the Commonwealth Government is £5,500, which amount, the Minister stated, is slightly less than that paid for the existing services with the Adelaide Steamship Co.
