The unrest occasioned by the cloud which threatens the pearling industry has resulted in a poor display of interest in local public matters. The impression conveyed to visitors is that there exists a feeling which says "Oh, let it slide until we are sure that they are not going to close down the industry!"

The splendid streets of three years ago have been allowed to fall into such a state of disrepair that it will now tax the resources of the municipality to bring them up to their erstwhile state of perfection.
