The inability to make progress into the wind had more to do with the prop being in and out of the water
Captain Dedman said:
"One of the problems is...when those propellors come out of the water it shakes the ship...like a thousand demons. When she hits the water again there is no power for quite few seconds. The governors go off and the power goes on."
