WIRELESS ON BURNS PHILP'S STEAMERS
Burns Philp and Company's new steamer Montoro, and the Mataram, both of which trade to Java and Singapore, are to carry powerful Marconi wireless installations. The Montoro, which left Brisbane on March 4, on her maiden voyage to Singapore, has an installation capable of sending messages 1500 miles or more. The Mataram will leave Sydney on April 1, and Brisbane on April 3, and before leaving the Southern port will be similarly equipped. These will be the first Australian-owned steamers trading to Eastern ports to carry wireless, and they will operate within the Empire Wireless System which is to be set up, with the erection of stations at Port Moresby, Darwin, Thursday Island and on the Queensland coast by the Federal Government.

AB notes:
The power of the Montoro's Marconi installation is relevant to the ongoing controversy about a possible distress message from Koombana.
