During the days of the search the sea was flat, the sun was fierce and the air was fat with moisture. The Bullarra had to return to port to pick up coal, and Captain Upjohn said that although the lighthouse flame on Bedout Island had been extinguished, the glass was not encrusted with salt, from which he concluded that the island had not met the full force of the gale. He set off to join others in a zigzag along Ninety Mile Beach. Captain Dalziel on the Muriel landed on Bedout and was struck by the hundreds of maimed birds scattered, along the beach. He concluded that Captain Upjohn didn't know what he was talking about, and set the vessels under his command in a patterned search centred on the island.
