PAINTED THE KOOMBANA

WELL-KNOWN artist F. J. Dawson, of California street, Adelaide, told me yesterday that Cpt. Walter Lee once commissioned him to paint a picture of the ill-fated Koombana, which foundered off the WA coast. "Down with his ship went Capt. Allen, an old school mate of mine at Port Adelaide model school," Mr. Dawson said. "He was wearing a diamond scarf pin given him by the Duke of Cornwall and York (late King George V.) for bringing the Royal ship Ophir up the Port River and taking it to the anchorage again."
