KOOMBANA OVERDUE

IS SHE AFLOAT?

Much, anxiety is felt regarding the Koombana which was due at Port

Hedland on the day of the hurricane. Our correspondent in Perth wired us on Monday morning that the Koombana was reported to be safe at Derby. A private advice from Roebourne on Monday morning, however, stated that there had been no word of that vessel for four days. The facts are difficult to arrive at, as all telegraphic communication with the North is cut off beyond Roebourne. Cables, however, connect Broome with Port Darwin through Dutch territory, and it is possible to get news round that way. This morning, we understand, the Fremantle agents of the s.s. Una, which was to have left this afternoon for Fremantle dirert, wired to have her stopped in case she should be needed to search for the Koombana. Wireless telegraphy is installed on the overdue vessel, but we are unable to learn the scope of the instrument, so as to judge whether, if the instrument be in order, she should be in touch with Fremantle.
