About the Waratah

Wellington, April 21.

J. Day, formerly second officer of the steamer Tottenham, replying to questions submitted by him by the Marine Department concerning his story that bodies were seen off East London shortly after the Waratah was reported missing, states that he mentioned the matter to three men in Melbourne when the Tottenham was there, and also to his parents on reaching England. The Captain and apprentices were talking about the incident to the ship's agent in Melbourne. If other members of the crew did not talk about the matter it was because orders were given by the Captain and other officers to say nothing, as it might cause the ship a lot of bother.

London, April 25.

The Wakefield reached Kerguelen Island on the 7th instant, and fruitlessly searched Crozet, Marian, Prince Edward, Apostles and other island for traces of the Waratah.
