The harbour at Cossack was named Tien Tsin by Walter Padbury and party in 1864 after the barque Tien Tsin (under Captain Jarman) which was chartered by Padbury to take provisions, stock, etc., to the first pioneers in the north-west.
The town of Cossack was situated on the west bank of Butcher's Inlet, near the mouth of the Harding River and received its name seven years later when HMS Cossack, with the Governor Sir Frederick Weld on board, visited Tien Tsin harbour in 1871. The townsite was declared on 25 May 1872 and the municipality was separated from Roebourne and declared on 30 November 1887.
Peak population appears to have been in the period 1894-5 when 141 Europeans and 266 Asiatics were recorded.
Cossack was for many years a busy port handling all supplies for Marble Bar, Whim Creek, Port Hedland, Condon, Balla Balla and several other points. It also, at one time was the headquarters of the pearling fleet which in the early eighties moved further north to Roebuck Bay, but the discovery of gold at Mallina and the subsequent Pilbara boom increased the importance of Cossack as the port of entry and exit to the area.
