TO BROOME.

Derby, June 14.

The Colonial Secretary (Mr. J. D. Connolly) and party on board the Koombana had the misfortune to reach Broome on Sunday, when it was impossible for them to sec the most interesting of the northern ports in its workaday aspect.

He could not promise a lighthouse for the entrance point, but he thought the department would be able to provide an unattended light, which would fully serve the needs of the port. A locomotive for the tramway bad been already ordered, and he could quite see the necessity for the extension of the jetty sufficiently to allow of boats of the Koombana type comfortably berthing alongside. He would inquire if money could be made available on the coming Estimates to add at least 100ft. to the structure.
