STEAM POWER.

Three and a half years ago (to be correct, in February 1906) the local council's attention was directed by the then acting Mayor (Mr. E. H. Angelo) to an article in this paper advocating the re-laying of the tramline with a view to the inauguration of a steam service. Mr. Angelo expressed himself as thoroughly in accord with the article, and the late Cr. Mansfield and Cr. Lefroy moved and seconded respectively a motion that the Government through the member for the district should be ask to favourably consider the matter. After working towards that end ever since the residents of Carnarvon were this week afforded the opportunity of seeing a locomotive and new passenger cars running on the local line. The engine, which is called the "Kiaora" (Maori word signifying "Good Luck ") is small, but travels at a rate sufficiently fast for all requirements for some time to come.
